The Stephens Collection. Is  closed for re- interpretation for the new visitor centre and will be open to the public in July

The Collection

The Stephens Collection aims to show:

  • aspects of the life of Dr Henry Stephens FRCS (1796-1864), the inventor of the famous blue-black writing fluid
  • the life of Henry 'Inky' Stephens MP for Hornsey and Finchley 
  • the development of the Stephens' Ink Company 
  • the history of Avenue House from 1859, and
  • the story of writing materials from ancient times

History

The collection was established by the Finchley Society; the assistance of the Writing Equipment Society and the London Borough of Barnet is also gratefully acknowledged.
